In this day and age, most companies in operation in any industry have an online reputation. Check out local review websites and the Better Business Bureau to see what other customers are saying about the different siding contractors operating in your area. Getting local referrals also ensures that you find a contractor who is familiar with local building codes.
Any reputable roofing contractor should be fully licensed, and insured to operate in the state of Michigan. You will want to check for both general liability and worker’s compensation insurance. This means that if your home is damaged or any workers are injured during repairs, you won’t be on the hook to cover the expenses incurred. And be sure to review warranty documentation, any reputable company should offer one. Also, manufacturers often offer certifications and designations that make a company more credible, so always look for those.
Another red flag to watch for is when contractors tell you that they can bill your insurance without you having to pay a deductible. This means the contractor is committing insurance fraud and dragging you into it with them. Beware when companies offer you one price on paper, but another price if you pay in cash. This could mean the job will be done “off the books” which could complicate things if something goes wrong. In addition, a roofing company that does not provide you with any choice in the materials used is not prioritizing their customers; yet another red flag. And be sure to ask roofing companies about their safety policies, training or programs. If they do not have one, they do not prioritize safety which is bad news.
